Ritual Reflection

June 22: I just performed the Summer Solstice Ritual with my family. I wrote it in ADF Norse Hearth Culture style, using a script on the Members-Only (I believe) Norse Ritual page. Of course I tweaked it a little bit with my own stuff and stuff that I’ve been using from other ADF sources. Overall, the ritual went okay, but it felt rushed because of some of the excerpts that I copied just didn’t read well—especially the Opening the Gates parts. Here’s my script . When I read the script in my head it sounded fine. But when I read it aloud with my family today it was difficult. Didn’t read right. I don’t know if that’s just the writing style or if maybe I copied it down wrong—because when I copied it from the webpage, it formatted weird on my word document. Or maybe I’m just not used to that style? That and it was just too wordy—kennings tend to be. As a Dyslexic (and probably my other neuro shit) I’m just not a fan of wordy, flowery poetic language. I like reading poems…...

Blessed Solstice!

Be you in the Northern or Southern hemispheres.   Let me tell you what, the Weather Deities are brining that summer heat this weekend.  It's supposed to be in the upper 90's!  Can't say that I'm looking forward to those temps.  However I would love to go camping soon.  Maybe next year, we'll plan ahead and book a site and invite some of our other camp-happy friends for a Solstice Party?  Find a place with a swimming beach--there's one near us, too.  I'm just not a big fan of crowds, especially if we're swimming with our kids.  We'll figure it out. My husband's not much of a camper, so maybe we can gather friends and/or family and rent a cabin near a beach?  I haven't done the cabin thing since I was a teenager. I'm just tired of being a homebody.  I'm in my 40's now and I want to go camping, darn it. Last night, on the Solstice Eve, I put out a fully enclosed queen-sized mosquito netting outside, and me and two of the kids spe...

Buggy Messengers

Oh, to be a Loki Fly on the wall...or a mint leaf. Sometimes Loki takes the form of a fly for me. I know its Loki because it follows me around and does things that flies don't usually do. Especially when He really wants my attention. Loki COULD just say something to get my attention...but no. Sometimes He'd rather take the form of a fly and drive me nuts until I finally stop swatting and ask if its Them. Once Loki delivers the message, the fly disappears and doesn't bother me...until the next time Loki Fly decides to "bug" me again. © 2024 Hearth Fox Oracle

Shrine Share #1

I'm hoping to do a Pick-a-tool or some other kind of community message once a week from now on.  I wanted to do a Pick-a-Tool reading today, but had a weather-related headache most of the day. While we've had beautiful weather here in Central Ohio, my brain hasn't been a fan. Instead, I'm sharing one of my shrines: The main Norse Shrine. Here I have many of my Norse entities represented (and no They don't mind sharing space): Horse Bookend for Sleipnir Loki Fox in a den Two Funko Pop Lokis (a gift from a friend)  Laufey's axe from the God of War  games A Polar Bear for Skadi Sol/Sunna, which I carved from rubber  Frigg as a little fake stone figure and a wooden weaving needle that came with a child's loom (partially hidden behind cauldron) Mjolnir Pendant for Thor A Odin statue (an old gift for my hubby) and prayer card (from The Magical Druid ) Two Yggdrasils, the pendent around Odin's head and the wire wrapping between the Council of Wolves.  (wire tre...

Book Review: The Witch's Heart

Again, I'm not a professional blogger or book reviewer, just a lover of books and writing. Seeing that I don't have any more Goddess Girls or Thunder Girls books on hand, I decided to read something more for my age and something a little bit closer to Norse Mythology: The Witch's Heart by Genevieve Gornichec . The story is about Angrboda, Gullveig, seidr, her relationships with Loki and Skadi, she and Loki's children, Odin, Ragnarok, and the new world born from Surt's fires and ash.  It's about love and friendship, betrayal and loss, healing, rage, and finding oneself.  I loved how the author weaved the surviving myths together, filling in chunks that we just don't have, as we only have what's survived with her own imagination. I laughed and cried, and really felt Angrboda's pain and strength. I think it's a beautiful story, skillfully written, and one of my favorite retellings of modern mythology so far. It also highlights the issue of why...

The First Day of Summer Will Soon Be Here

(Copy/paste from my Druidry Blog ) The Summer Solstice is in a couple of days and I'm excited. I've been feeling the Norse Solar Goddess Sunna poking at me over the last few months. I'm working on a kid-friendly ritual to honor Her with my family, without the wasps and sudden possession this time! Yes, last year, I hosted a Summer Solstice ritual with a local group (before I joined ADF).  We had the ritual in a shelter at Delaware State Park (Ohio) and I was unknowingly standing under a wasp nest that was beneath a sign.  I was stung 5 times--once on my thumb and 4 on my thigh.  Some of the attendees were surprised by how I handled it.  I wasn't crying, cursing, or hating the wasps or myself.  After some ice and a few minutes to sit, I just moved the altar and continued.  Don't get me wrong, it hurt!  But whether I was sitting or performing the rite, it'd still be hurting, so I decided to go on with ritual that I had worked so hard on planning....
