I just performed the Summer Solstice Ritual with my family. I wrote it in ADF Norse Hearth Culture style, using a script on the Members-Only (I believe) Norse Ritual page. Of course I tweaked it a little bit with my own stuff and stuff that I’ve been using from other ADF sources. Overall, the ritual went okay, but it felt rushed because of some of the excerpts that I copied just didn’t read well—especially the Opening the Gates parts. Here’s my script.
When I read the script in my head it sounded fine. But when I read it aloud with my family today it was difficult. Didn’t read right. I don’t know if that’s just the writing style or if maybe I copied it down wrong—because when I copied it from the webpage, it formatted weird on my word document. Or maybe I’m just not used to that style?
That and it was just too wordy—kennings tend to be. As a Dyslexic (and probably my other neuro shit) I’m just not a fan of wordy, flowery poetic language. I like reading poems…and I’m a wordy writer, but when it comes to reading something out loud—just get to the point. I ain’t no slam poet, if I’m reading something out loud, I prefer it to be direct. For the most part. The older I get, I’m realizing this about myself.
But I dunno, I don’t think I’m going to use that ritual script again.
Usually before I perform rituals, I practice outloud first. *shrugs* Don’t know why I didn’t with this one, especially since it’s a style that I’m not used to.
It read rough. Thus, the ritual felt rushed—broke the headspace. The kids were bored. It was disappointing—I didn’t feel the connection.
I’m going to write another ADF Norse-style ritual—give it another go—use more of my own words. I may look into more Norse/Germanic prayers, too. The two that I have by others I’ve used for a couple of years, too, but I think I was just frustrated by my stumbles. I’ll spend some time and re-work it, and take a look at non-ADF Norse scripts, too.
Also for the Omens, I changed tools in the middle, because I was pulling runes that I think were more for me and less for my kids. So I changed to an animal themed oracle deck for them, which worked out much better.
For The Work of the ritual, we took the throw outside, put our hands on it, and asked for Sunna’s blessings. She gave them.
After the ritual, I performed some more things, and Sunna helped with purification and charging.
