Blessed Equinox!

March 20

Spring Equinox - March 20, 2026

The Sun is strong enough to carry itself higher into the sky!

Reindeer Mother has calved and shed Her antlers!  She's reunited with Her herd!

Now it is time for Rabbit and Serpent to take Their places as Gatekeeper in my ADF Druidry!

Also it's the Epopteia, Persephone has returned from the Underworld, walking with Life in every step!

Happy First Day of Spring here in the northern hemisphere and Fall in the southern.  I don't know if I have any southern hemi readers, but all the same.

I don't have a big ritual planned for today or tomorrow.  On Tuesday or Wednesday, my online grove did a Good Luck ritual round robin, where we used dice, and Loki, Crows, and Raven gave advice about turning bad luck into good luck via practical means.

My kids haven't said anything about this High Day...plus today, Midkid's coming back from a 2 day school camping trip.  Normally, I'd be reading equinox stories to them leading up, but I'm also fine with it being a surprise tomorrow when they get up.

Children's Books We Enjoy:
  1. Converse, Kathleen.  A Wheel of the Year Book: Flora & the First Day of Spring.  2021.

  3. Hopman, Ellen Evert.  Once Around the Sun: Stories, Crafts & Recipes to Celebrate the Sacred Earth Year.  2022.
  4. Waddle, Tara.  Ostara's Hare.  2019.  Midkid loves this book.

I just filled up the eggs, which was no easy task with Jimmy V.

Jimmy Ventress took off with one of the half eggs...of course. She was so proud of herself!

Then she came back for more, which I wouldn't let her have. I had to keep moving the eggs from her reach, until they and nearly her were both in my lap. I even used her full name, which meant nothing bc she's a cat--"Queen Jimmy Ventress Wren! No!"

So she started playing with the candy, even scooping the cadbury eggs under her...

...and daring me to come get them. Definitely made this part of the equinox more interesting, painful, and fun.

Activities:
  • Reading spiritual/science/nature books about spring.
  • Baskets of goodies and treats too large for plastic eggs.
  • Egg hunt: coins, jelly beans, chocolate eggs, and a little toy.  My kids love 3D-printed stuff, that's usually what we go with.
  • Decorate hardboiled eggs.
  • Family Ritual, honoring Persephone, with a focus on our goals.  Then we write this goals on eggs or we hold seeds and focus on said goals--plant them.  Eggs go outside if the earth is soft enough or into pots.  Seeds are planted after Mother's Day--we lack the space for a plant nursery.  I bought a ton of local wild flower seeds for the The Melissae and other critters this year.
  • I plan on doing a lil bit of landscaping and making a flower and herb bed.  It's an activity that I used to do with my mom many years ago, and I'd like to teach my kids, too.
  • Feast.  I was really stumped on what to make this year.  None of our usual spring recipes sounded good, and I haven't had the focus to look at ancestral recipes.  We decided on something simple:
    • Breakfast for Dinner: eggs, bacon, sausage, fresh fruit.
    • Then for dessert, a GF cake that looks like a decorated egg.  I thought about hollowing it out and putting candy it in, but we'll already have enough candy.
  • If the weather and my joints continues to be nice, I'd like to go to the park and hike, too.  Or at least walk around the neighborhood.
I used to do spring cleaning as an activity, but we clean all the time.  We just got a dry erase board a couple of weeks ago, for the kids chores.  They take care of their rooms, their laundry, the cat box, sweeping, their bathroom, the trash, the dishes, and the island, and we share mopping, yard work and recycling--I do everything else, including some overlap (I'm still teaching them the things that my clean freak mom never taught me for some reason).

Especially with ADHD, I clean in bits and pieces, whenever motivation strikes me--but I do clean.  It may take me a week to clean one room, and I will bounce around from chore to chore, but it gets cleaned!  It's not immaculate by any means, I mean, a family lives here.  But it's not a pig sty either.  I hate clutter, and I've been too overwhelmed to clean before (not hoarder level), and I made a promise to the House Spirits that that wasn't going to happen again.

I have a donation box set up by the door and when it gets full, we take it.

Maybe spring cleaning ain't for you?  Maybe coming up with a weekly or monthly cleaning plan works better?

Maybe making a promise to your Hearth Kindred is another idea (remember to do so with room for grace for yourself)?

March 23:
Saturday went well.  The kids were surprised by the baskets and even more that they forgot it was a High Day.  We had the egg hunt and my oldest found the special golden egg that had three choices:
  1. Dessert
  2. Cash
  3. Half Priced Books
After thinking about it for a bit, he picked the bookstore.

Later we had eggs, bacon, sausage, and bananas for dinner.  Instead of cake, we had cookies.

We ended the night, not with games as planned, but with reading a spring story.

On Sunday, we attended Three Cranes Grove's Hilaria ritual honoring Kybele.  Whomever did the Inspiration part I absolutely loved.  3CG is a very musical grove--their Bards are wonderful.  I don't know if the person who called for Inspiration is a Bard, but they used drumming, and it was flippin great.  I haven't seen that yet, and it makes sense.  Let's use music to Call for Inspiration.

For another song, Archdruid / Rev. Avende was playing a banjo and the song was energetic and a lot of fun, too.

For the omen, because I couldn't hear a lot of the ritual, I drew my own using the Elder Futhark.  The person who called Inspiration also did 3CG's omen.  I'm not sure what system they used because I couldn't hear them.

I drew:
  • Ancestors: Mannaz Reversed - Dormant Talent
  • Nature Spirits: Hagalaz - Delay
  • Shining Ones: Raidho - Ride
This was a message about my Reindeer Mother story that I've been working on for 9 years, and over the last few weeks, I've been working on the artwork.  This message was telling me to keep working on the artwork.  Eventually that sleeping talent will awaken.  Keep practicing.

The last few messages that I've received from my Kindred have been about my book.

Someone from 3CG did put the message in chat, and it was pretty similar to my omen, except the third, which was about support to grow the community.

After chili dogs during a rockin thunderstorm (and petitioning the Storm Gods), I read another Ostara book to the kiddos.

It was a pretty great High Day weekend.  My birthday weekend is coming up this weekend, and I'm hoping to go to my favorite shop--The Magical Druid.

Because this post is pretty long, I'm going to do a Community Spring Reading either tomorrow or another time this week.

Thanks for all of the support!
