Ostara Carrot Countdown. March 2021.
It’s March and the Wheel is turning closer to the Spring Equinox here in the Northern Hemisphere. It’s the month of Persephone’s Dance, as I call it, where She starts the journey to return to the surface world, but misses Her beloved and keeps returning to Hades. Eventually She’ll be forced to return, as goes the deal between Her, Hades, and Demeter. (As you may be able to tell, I see Persephone willingly becoming Hades’ Queen, instead of yet another forgotten Nymph.)

I tend to honor Earth and Solar entities during this season, such as Kore/Persephone, Dionysus, Sunna, Reindeer Mother, and a few others. Although this year will be different, as Bee wants to be honored this Spring—an entity that I usually don’t honor until Midspring and summer.
Persephone. March 2022.
If I’m just honoring Persephone, this day is the Epopteia (E-pop-tay-ah, according to Google), which is something like the fiery return of Persephone from the Underworld, as I learned it years ago.

Sometimes I may focus on Dionysus’ Return from the Underworld, as He sacrificed Himself in the harvest season to sustain us through the winter.

The Spring Equinox also marks the period when the Sun has gained enough strength to carry itself into the sky. Meaning that Reindeer Woman can shed Her antlers and return to the Earth to calve.

I’m sure, depending on where you are in the world, you can feel, see, and hear it? Here in Central Ohio, certain birds are back. There’s more birds chirping and singing their territory and mating songs. Birds are looking for places to nest, possibly clearing out old nests. Some critters, like insects are probably in your house. I know spring is back when the ants are on my counter! Or when wasps begin to harass us on our deck as they look for good places to build their nests and raise their colony.

Turkey Vultures are back in our skies as the temps rise and the snow and ice melt, revealing those who didn’t survive the actual proper winter we had this year.

Crows are calling more and more, not that they really leave the area, but I’ve missed their calls and morning patrols. Seems like there’s more of them than usual.

Another year-round animal that’s more active in my neighborhood is the cardinal. A rival male has shown up to try and steal the other’s mate. Lots of end-of-winter animal drama is happening outside. Turn off your phones and look outside. Better than anything on those brain rotting reality shows (yes, I watch that brain rot, too—sometimes its good to relax with stupid shit…as long as there’s moderation and balance.)
Spring Equinox. March 2024.
Although you may want to mask up, soon those trees with the stinky pink and white flowers will begin to bloom, heralding the coming warmer weather and longer days. Early Spring is rather stinky as everything melts and the temps rise.

We’ve already had a lot of thunderstorm-windstorm-snow storm mixtures and as of now, it’s only the 9th of March. More storms will be coming. Rain to soften the earth…and flood some areas. Thunder to wake everyone and thing up with its overhead crashes and strikes. High winds and sometimes tornadoes to reshape the land and affect the population.

Oh, and I can feel the changes in my sinus’—seasonal allergies as the plants begin to wake up and fill the air with their sperm and seeds.

It may sound like I’m complaining, but I’m not. I’m really looking forward to Spring. I enjoy the changes. The days are slowly getting longer. Temperatures are yo-yoing. And I’m finding myself more aware of the early morning chirping and scents.

By the time this posts, my husband and I will’ve got all we need for Ostara for the kids—the pails of treats, the plastic eggs for our hunt, lamb stew, and honey cake. Probably no eggs this year though. I rather us not blow our refund just on the price of eggs. In lieu of chicken eggs in the past, we’ve also decorated paper eggs, polymer eggs, and wooden eggs. Or made other things like bird feeders, or just went outside and picked up garbage!
