Today I finally got the inspiration for my first mermaid piece, inspired by me. My long time swimming name "Orca" has been retired and replaced by "Mermom". All of those days spent drawing myself in university resulted in this...
A little more Come Hither than intended (although fits, kind of merfolk MO--lure in and devour--as hubby excitedly commented, "Oh shit, I'd be your first victim!"), and I was trying to smile, but I haven't figure out how to zoom in for tiny detail without accidently deleting the rest of the image...like half of this picture (had to redo that tail twice).
I am happy with the nose, although again, if I had more control with zooming in, I could make it look better with shading and highlights. Also I realized that the sun's position and the highlights and shadows don't line up. Especially with the tail partially blocking the sun. Everything lined up...until I deleted half of the picture.
Well, things for next time.
I don't know if I'm finished with this mermaid self portrait yet. But I already want to make a Lake Mermom, with darker green skin and brown lake water. I think I'm going to take photos of our lake for study and inspiration. I also want to use my long flippers for the fins. We went to the lake today and in between swimming from shallows to the further buoys (some laps with noodles, some not), I'd rest by back floating and having my flippers out of the water--which required some serious ab and breathing control. Rest the legs, work out the torso.
I'm pretty proud of this piece. I love it and seeing me as Mermom makes me super happy. In terms of my "mersonal"--"mermaid alter ego?" I'm not sure. I need to experiment some more. I do really love catfish, so maybe my next Lake Mermom could be a local catfish...oooooo or koi? I also love koi.
I am exhausted after today's workout, and its 11 pm anyway.
Be safe this week/end.
