I tend to read/listen to a lot of really heavy books, be them scholarly books about paganism and ancient history, the occult, or mental health books about trauma and healing. When I need a break from these topics, I reach for my favorite genres: Middle School, High School, and Young Adult. I also have two kids in middle school, so having mom-approved chapter books with subjects outside of the school curriculum is important—especially with a billionaire Trump Simp who’s no business being in charge of Education. I also know what my kids’ interests are, and that they’re more likely to want to read those, than what’s required. I’d rather required reading not taint their love of reading (or dumb them down with whitewashing), as can happen. Yes, they still have to read their homework, but they can also take “brain breaks” with stories they’re actually going to love. Of course my kids have their own bookshelves that I’m not all that interested in, such as military history for my eldest and mech fighters for my midkid (I read to my youngest). (On long trips, we also listen to audio books as well as music.)
A little light reading for me. You’d be surprised at how many good and powerful stories and beautiful art are in Children and Young Adult books, dealing with fun and serious topics, explored with humans, supernaturals, robots, and animal characters. Some people tend to look down on these books because they're for kids and young adults--or maybe the books are "too easy". Yall missing out. It's important to have good authors in these genres. To quote the cliche, kids are the future. I'd rather have a future filled with compassionate, informed, creative people.
I read these stories for my kids and for my Inner Child.
I just finished ‘The Wild Robot’ trilogy by Peter Brown (which I really enjoyed). Yesterday, I got a book for my midkid who loves the ocean. I started and finished the second book in Rosanne Parry’s ‘Voice of the Wilderness’ series A Whale of the Wild, a story about two young orcas getting separated from their pod and dealing with trauma, strong emotions, and hunger.
At the end of the book are facts about orcas and the area that this pod is from. I really wasn’t expecting the story to be so good. Once I started, I couldn’t put it down.
Do something for your Inner Child and read something fun.
The next book on my list is Pax by Sara Pennybacker, a story of a little boy and his pet fox.
