A New Plant Friend

 June 19:

I was out in my yard the other day, when I noticed that we have a few large leafy plants growing among our pumpkins. We had them last year, and because I originally thought they were pumpkins, I let them grow (of course no little pumpkin flowers grew). This year, I can see the difference much clearer.

Which left me with…WTH? Looking around the area, there weren’t any more of these plants…

I took a picture and reverse image searched on Google, and what popped up was Burdock. I did more searches just to be sure. From my research, it turns out that burdock is a great plant to have from herbal remedies to magik.

According to Patti Wigington at Outside the Lines, this wonderful little plant is good for:

  • “Cleansing and Purification

  • Protection

  • Natural Diuretic for kidneys and blood, thus can “flush out negativity”

  • Teas (albeit bitter)

  • Root Chewing

  • Constipation

  • Hair Loss

  • Dry Skin

  • Gastric Issues

  • Hang over doors to prevent lightning strikes

  • Connected to Thor

  • Sprinkle dried burdock in your bath when sick

  • Make some incense”

Nearly all of the plant is useable, from other sources I’ve read, too. Now, like Patti, I’m no herbalist, and even though the plant in my backyard matches the numerous images that I’ve looked at, I’m still not comfortable with ingesting it.

I’ve been a witch for over 30 years, but I’m not a green one, by any means. I’ve used my fair share of plants—fresh and dried—in my food, medicine, and magiks, but not harvested from the wild…or my yard…unless I’m absolutely certain of what they are (common knowledge). Shoot, for years I had a Rot Thumb until 2020, when—like many—I learned how to garden. Gardening runs in my family, but I wasn’t taught by them for some reason. I have my favorite plants and some Plant Spirit Allies, but again, I’m no Green Witch. Most of my magik consists of spirit work, energies, sigils, runes, and fire.

However, plants just grow around me. Without planting, I’ve had Morning Glories show up (and not from a neighbor), gourds, pumpkins, watermelon, numerous tree species, chicory, and now burdock just grow on its own. (Where if I tried to intentionally plant, it doesn’t grow.)

Now I know that seeds travel and are even dispersed by animal droppings, and that sometimes seeds be may stay dormant until growing conditions are just right (a Landscaper Druid told me that). But it’s just interesting. Every since I moved out of my parents house, plants just find me.

The more work that I do with Nature Spirits, the more plants that have to do with protection show up in my yard, too.

I’m not a believer in co-winky-dinks, so I think I may sit outside with burdock and have a chat.
