I got a new statue for my birthday, which I’ll be talking more about in an April 14th post. It’s an interesting statue—of Pythia. However the spirit that resides in the statue isn’t a Hellenic High Priestess and Oracle, oh no, it’s Norse Seiðkona spirit. I felt her as soon as I pulled the statue out of the box, and confirmed it later.
With Vesta’s permission, I switched statues on my desk. Normally Vesta sits on my desk, decked out in pride bracelets, fidget rings, my first crochet chain, a Kuan Yin pendant, a Mother Mary keychain, a locket with my kids’ picture, and little gifts from my kids. Now Vesta’s sitting on the bookshelf next to my side of the bed.
And the other is on my desk, staring with her eerie realistic eyes. I’ve felt those eyes looking and watching. Last night, I decided to interview the Seiðkona within.
She wanted to use Mimir’s Well: A Norse Heathen Oracle Deck & Study System by Tammy L. Rois. A favorite tool of many of my Kindred, actually—not just the Norse ones.
As I shuffled, I said, “Tell me about yourself, Seiðkona.”
I immediately saw “FREYJA.”
But before I could inquire more, hubs came to bed, and the statue said, “Later.”
It’s later, at 9:40am.
It’s odd that Freyja would answer, when it’s not Her energy that I feel in the statue, although it would make sense, since She taught Oðin Seiðr and is my primary teacher as I learn it, too.
Over the last couple of years, as I’ve focused more on Seiðr and runic magiks, Freyja kinda been taking Hekate’s place. Not as a Spiritual Mother, but it makes sense. Seiðr and runes are a Northern Paganism thing, not a Hellenic one.
Again, it’s later!
Again, I ask to tell me more about yourself.
Again I see the name Freyja.
Is it a Seiðkona Spirit or Freyja?
“Both.” “Gothi.”
Both a Gothi Seiðkona and the Goddess Freyja. Which makes sense, given what we Seiðr Workers can do.
I think Gothi is a priest/ess?
I think it’s spelled goði, only instead of an English letter d as we often see, it’s this ð, which is called a “voiced dental fricative”. From my observations studying Seiðr, ð is pronounced as “-th” in English. Like
Oðin is pronounced as Othin.
Njorðr = North-ur
Seiðr = Sayth-ur
Varðlokkur = Varth-locker
Urð = Urth
Of course pronouncing these names as most folks know them is perfectly fine, too. Despite what some know-it-alls think, the Gods that I’ve met aren’t huge pain-in-the-ass sticklers about spelling, grammar, and pronunciation. They’re not racist/classist/ableists. I often use both formats of Oðin/Odin, and He doesn’t seem to care. He knows who I’m talking about.
When I handwrite, I use the VDF. As for typing, I’ll try to use ð for my own training, but more likely I’ll be using both the VDF and the English d.
I’m not well versed in Norse Paganism terminology yet. I’m not 100% about this, but I wasn’t aware that Seiðkona’s had clergy or similar leadership. From what I’ve read, Seiðkona’s seemed solitary and nomadic, traveling where they’re needed. Although I’ve read of those who may have had their own singers of the vardlokkur (spirit songs).
Again, I still have more to learn. May be more of a modern thing, since I don’t know how many Seið Workers are nomadic these days. But I know that some are part of Norse Groups which have clergy.
Course one can be both. I am. Well, not a Norse Priestess, just a general Deity Initiated one and a Seiðkona. (Loki and I had a big conversation about me fully embracing the title of Seiðkona the other day. They said that I’m no longer an Oracle, but I am a Seiðkona.)
Continuing on from that short impromptu lesson (also this post is getting longer than I planned)…
Okay, Freyja, what can you tell me about the statue and Goði Seiðkona?
I drew Freyr. Interesting. Freyja’s twin brother. Whose name may mean Lord, as Hers may mean Lady. A Vanir God of Fertility and Abundance.
The Goði serves Freyr.
Can you tell me anything else?
All I’m seeing is the word “Twin”. Can you tell me more about that? I have drawn the rune Isa - She’s hitting on the word “rest”. Freyja wants me to take a break and just sit with what I’ve learned so far.
Okie dokie.
As I was putting my deck away, Freyja said to leave them out.
Yes, ma’am.
