Tarot Methods

An old tarot lesson from October 24th, 2020.

Reverse Card Pull
In the morning, you draw a card (or another tool if tarot isn't your thing), and DON'T LOOK AT IT. Fight the urge to flip! Then you go about your day. When your day is finished, write about it in a journal or notebook, then flip the card and see if it correlates to your day.

Storytelling
As of October, I am taking an Intermediate Tarot class with musician and teacher, Gina LaMonte. In this post I’m going to share some exercises that help me learn tarot through the art of Storytelling.

First, we did a Tarot Mad Lib exercise, where we drew one card and LaMonte asked us one thing about the card - noun, verb, adjective, etc. Then she read the story. It was weird, because I had the first card and the story kind of told about my card (I was using the Tarot of the Witches--quickly realizing that the super duper simplified pictures of this deck weren't going to work for today's class. It's my keyword practice deck).

Next, we drew three cards and just had to tell a story. Using my Guardian of the Night deck by MJ Cullinane, I drew and saw:

A snake, freshly born from dead flesh meets a hare divining with the constellations in the night sky. In the distance, the snake saw that they weren’t alone, as the Orca king was making an offering for the Hare’s wisdom. (I also had that the King was teaching the Hare, since King's tend to be masters of something. Both cards were cups.)

Then we did a 10 Card Structured Story, where each of us drew one card and LaMonte called on us to tell the story. This is the structure that we used (this is pretty much the structure of the pip cards and what the numbers mean. Ace/One’s usually represent the Beginnings and Potential. Your story starts with you--you are potential):

  1. First card – main character

  2. Direction outside of one’s self. Moving towards or away from something. Something that the main character is going to move into. Motivation. Purpose.

  3. Circle of friends, enemies. Community. Small groups. Activities.

  4. Setting – boundaries, placements. Rules, boundaries. How to move in the world.

  5. Crisis. Oh no not another learning card. Conflict. Absolutely wrong.

  6. Balanced. Harmonious. Clarity. Vision. See the crisis you came through. What is the main character starting to learn?

  7. Another crisis, but a moment to reflect and learn about what’s happening to them. Introspection. Might reflect imbalance.

  8. Almost done. Building on experiences. Card of return. Karmic debts being repaid.

  9. End of the story. Fulfillment. How it ends.

  10. Set up for the sequel.

My addition was for the second card, which I drew Justice, so the person was moving away from something that did him wrong.

The story of the main character was really interesting with each of our different decks and perspectives.

Last exercise, we did a one card reading inspired by Mary Greer. An exercise to climb into the card and be a part of the world, instead of just looking at it.

  1. Observe the card. Make a list of everything you see.

  2. Shifting. Writing "I am" in front of your list. Simplify the sentences.

  3. Next, write a very short story about one point on the card.

  • Bright blue crescent moon

  • A frog looking to the right/future

  • 2 swords coming out of the water

  • Dark forms beneath water

  • fog

  • clouds

  • Lightning bugs

  • Evil eyes in the sky

  • Blues

  • Greens

  • Browns and Brass

  • Fear, Uncertainty

  • Quick decision to be made

Then I did the "I am"s :

  • I am bright blue moon

  • I am frog

  • I am dark form

  • I am water

  • I am fog

  • I am Lightning Bug

  • I am Evil Eye

  • I am two swords

  • I am blues

  • I am greens

  • I am browns and bronzes

  • I am fear

  • I am Uncertainty

  • I am Quick Decision

Next came the short story, where there is no right or wrong:

I am the frog, grasping the sword. The lighting bugs and moonlight have cleared the path a little bit. I can see dark forms moving beneath the water. One is reaching for me. What should I do? Stay and possibly get eaten or take a leap of faith and follow the lightning bugs through the fog?

The traditional meaning of the 2 of Swords is about mental processes, things that happen quickly. Are you going to act or are you going to stay blinded and lost? And possibly get eaten?

I don’t have the cards memorized yet, but using this method helped me understand, especially as I am a writer and highly imaginative. It was so much easier trying this method, to become the cards. To put myself in the scene, then to use the booklet or keywords, especially with this deck. Shift perspective and narrow your focus. See the whole world around you in this card.

I'm definitely going to play around with this method more. Even if you’re not a writer, a story teller, or imaginative, give it a try.
