Brigit. Brigid. Brigando. Brighid. Brigantia. Brigette. Brigitte. Bride. St. Brigid. Mama Brigette. Other spellings, other cultures. In this post, I’ll most likely be switching between the different spelling. Dyslexia or divine yada yada? *Shrugs*

Ah, another popular Goddess. A Jack-of-Trades Goddess. A Goddess that you can find in the Irish, Celtic (btw Celts were found throughout Europe, and weren’t just in Ireland), Gaulish, and even Haitian cultures. Although the Mama Brigitte that I’ve met doesn’t have the same energy as the Irish/Gaulish Brigit/Brigando. My Mama Brigitte is a plus-sized black woman with dark eyes. Beautiful curly shoulder length dark brown hair held with a headband. Friendly, but no nonsense. Welcoming, but don’t wear it out. With domestic cats. Powerful.
For me, Mama Brigitte and Brigit are not the same goddess. They feel too different. I know deities are shapeshifters and if She really wanted to, She could hide the energy that I know. So it is always possible.
Moving on.
I first experienced Brigit in my early 20’s. I had a dream about her and a stranger. The next day, I saw that stranger in a pagan forum and without thinking much about it, I told them. Obviously, they avoided me afterwards. It was an experience that taught me lot about psychic things and total strangers.
It would be many years before I’d encountered Her again. This time at a Three Cranes Grove public ritual. They are a Gaulish group (although members also were part of other Hearth Cultures). In their group, their version of Her was Brigando. But the experience wasn’t a direct encounter.
One year, I attended an Imbolc ritual—Imbolc being a High Day that honors Brigando. The Druids had brought a flame from Kildare and gave us each a tealight with a flame from that holy fire. We were also given blessed cords—cords which I still have today.
And then? Nothing. Over the years, I’d only experience Brigid during others guided meditations, but She wasn’t one of my regulars. I couldn’t even celebrate Imbolc, because I didn’t have a connection to that holy day. But I still wanted to do something, so I renamed February 1st “Midwinter” (since the Winter Solstice is the 1st day of Winter for us); a day for me to honor my Hearth Mothers and Spirits.
At the beginning of 2025, Brigette made Herself known to me. It was time. She joined my Hearth Mothers and Spirits and on February 1st, I honored Her with the Others on Midwinter.
Shortly after, a Flame Tending Cill within ADF was looking for new members. Given that I was already a (pre-ADF) Hearth Keeper-Vestal for Hestia-Vesta, I signed up. I was already honoring my Hearth Mothers and Spirits. Why not one more? Why not on a schedule with a group of Flame Keepers? Why not?
Like Hekate, Brigitte came to me when I was younger, but was not yet ready to be one of her Flame Tenders. She’d pop in randomly to deliver messages for me and for others. Biding Her time. I’m not sure what changed and why 2025 was the year, but only a God knows who and what They want.
The only symbols that I have to represent Brigit are those cords and a couple of beautiful prints. No statues yet—I haven’t found one that I like. Maybe like Hekate (until recent), it hasn’t been created yet? I am very picky about my statues (still haven’t found one for Dionysus and He’s been known to me for 10-11 years).
I continue to tend the flame when I’m scheduled…as well as on days that just feel right. Tending the flame for all of my Hearth Mothers and Spirits. Brigando doesn’t feel like a new acquaintance, but more like family that maybe you just don’t see very often. Perhaps She’s just in the back because Others are in the front, working with me in shapeshifting, ecstatic posturing, and seiðr?
No doubt, we’ll get to know one another more. One day.
