Channeling to me is different than possession work. It's the difference between evocation (entity in your space) and invocation (entity in you). Channeling is me repeating what the entity is saying, whereas possession is them in my body speaking through me.
With channeling I am present, with possession most of the time, I'm not. When doing possession work, sometimes it's like I'm in a waiting room. I can see the entity talking to someone, but I can't see who. Sometimes I'm partially present, especially for email/text sessions. I'm more aware of my body and surroundings, but not much.
I think it was Ivo Dominguez in Spirit Speak who said the levels of possession are like being in a car (I may be wrong--I read so many books on this subject, I can't always remember who said what. My apologies.): Sometimes you're the driver, sometimes you're a front seat passenger, sometimes a backseat passenger, and sometimes you're asleep!

Also for me, channeling is almost effortless, whereas possession work takes a great deal more, and it takes more of a toll on me, too--there's often way more recovery time. So when some people say they're basically the same, I have to strongly disagree. But then that's my experience with the two.
I understand why many people see channeling as all of the above--either way there's something than just you in your body speaking! For me, there's a difference. Various authors and teachers say different things. I don't believe that any are wrong--humans tend to not be able to agree on definitions, even if they're "official". People interpret/hear/read things how they want. Words can have power, but they can also be frustrating and meaningless. Definitions change over time and cultures. Definitions can also cause us to miss important messages when we become too focused on things.
We're still immortal souls existing in limited mortal meatsuits conveying messages from other immortals, trying to explain what the heck it all means. No sense in arguing, Conduits, just relay the messages.
